One Borough Festival, Parsloes Park, Saturday 23 July 2022

We were so pleased to be a part of the One Borough Festival, held on Parsloes Park, Dagenham, on Saturday 23 July. It marked the first time the group has been able to be part of a public event since March 2020, due to the Covid -19 pandemic.

We were kindly given space by the organisers in the Health and Wellbeing Hub, a very large tent which hosted numerous organisations and services relevant to health and wellness, including cardiovasular health, healthy lungs, breast health awareness and healthy eating.

Once the One Borough Festival had opened the gates to the public, shortly after 11 am, the Health and Wellbeing Hub tent quickly filled up with members of the public of all ages, showing interest in everything on offer in the Hub.

We had a steady stream of visitors to our 'stand' which essentially consisted of committee members of the group offering advice and suggestions, backed up by relevant information leaflets from Diabetes UK.

We were visited by one or two people with Type 1 diabetes, but the majority of our visitors had either Type 2 diabetes, or had been informed by their GP or Practice Nurse that they were at risk of Type 2 diabetes.

This is very representative of diabetes in the general population, with Type 2 diabetes outnumbering Type 1 diabetes by a ratio of at least ten to one. And for every person with known Type 2 diabetes there is at least one person who is at risk of  developing Type 2 diabetes in the forseeable future. This state of increased risk is known as Pre Diabetes.

We were concerned to hear from visitors to our stand who had been told that they have Pre Diabetes that most of them didn't have a clear follow up plan for this, which would normally consist of an offer for a structured programme of lifestyle advice, and a yearly blood glucose check. We suspect that the lack of systematic follow up through primary care (GP practices) could be at least partly due to the impact of the Covid pandemic on primary care services.

This is something that needs to be addressed, and for our part we will be posting more information about Pre Diabetes, and what follow up care to expect, on this website.

We thoroughly enjoyed our day at the One Borough Festival and look forward to taking part in similar events in Barking and Dagenham in the future. Many thanks to everyone who came along to say hello and talk to us.
